Eynomia – Sea Of Tears (CD)

Eynomia – Sea Of Tears (CD)

US melodic metal band Eynomia released their debut album “Break Free” in 2018. Seven years later the follow-up is here. The album kicks off with “To The End” which I guess could be placed somewhere between power metal and prog metal. A cool and energetic up-tempo track with killer vocals from Phyllis Rutter. A great quirky guest solo from Michael Abdow. “Jekyll And Hyde” keeps the pace high and something I pointed out when I reviewed the band’s first album, is that I shall admit I’m not a huge fan of power metal, but this band manages to keep it on the right side of power metal, much more interesting and proggy enough to make me a believer and I’m also a big fan of Phyllis who has a raspy quality to her voice that sets her apart from most other female power metal singers, something I really like. Great guitar solo from Chris Bickley in this one, too! “Mask Of Vengeance” takes it down in tempo and adds a heavy melancholic touch that almost reminds me a bit of Evergrey, which I really like. Here they also add the guest vocal talents of Mike Vescera, which gives it a new dimension. I shall however point out I’m however not 100 % happy with the mix of the album. It sounds a bit dense, overpowering and compact and listening to the entire album in one go gets you a bit of auditory fatigue. The title track does offer a short bit of relief with its soft start. “Reborn” is another cool melodic proggy tune with stellar vocals from Phyllis. “The Demon Inside” is another killer track with a heavy vibe with a sort of medieval melodic touch to the chorus. “The One” takes it all in a different more straight-ahead melodic direction which offers a nice new vibe. This one I would actually label power metal with its sing-along chorus, but Eynomia still manage to keep it interesting. “Time Will Come” takes us back into the heavier melancholic sphere. A power number, indeed! The album finishes on an up-tempo note with “Set Back”, a proggy metal number with lots of cool twists and turns and Phyllis getting all bluesy and raw in the mid section – love it!. Conclusion – a splendid album that should attract fans of both melodic metal, power metal and more proggy stuff. Highly recommended!

TAD MOROSE – Revenant (CD)

Wow, that was an album long coming! 10 years since the last one! What immediately strikes me is that the band sounds darker and heavier than their previous efforts. I have no problem with that, none at all. The band delivers a big chunk of riff-oriented powerful metal in the vein of bands like Nevermore, Judas Priest (think "Painkiller"),  Former singer Urban Breed has now been replaced by Ronny Hemlin, who does an excellent job and at times actually reminds me a bit of Ripper Owen. I really love it when the band slows down a bit and digs a bit deeper into the more evil sounding tonalities and then mix them with classic power chords, like in “Within A Dream” which reminds me a bit of a marriage between Testament and Evergrey. New guitarist Kenneth Jonsson (The Citadel) does an outstanding job! The production is also fat and powerful, and brings out the best of the music. They actually now remind me of a band I’ve really missed: Pathos! And, that’s really good coming from me ;-).

ANGHER INCORPORATED - Phase 1: Dark City Lights (MCD)

If you’re into Dream Theater in their heavy detuned moments, loaded with heavy riffs and pounding rhythms, you should check out prog metallers Angher Incorporated. This French foursome features singer Sebastian Barbara, guitarist Richard Roncarlo, bassist Raphael Mizzi and hard-hitting drummer Yann Gresset. The band’s debut features five well-produced and powerful tracks. It’s not as technical as Dream Theater, but leans a bit more towards bands like Evergrey or Pain Of Salvation. Dark and melancholic, but still with a glimpse of hope hear and there. The musical delivery is tight, flawless and highly impressive. Killer production, too. The vocals are slightly limited, but good and with less of an accent that you usually hear from French bands. My only complaint would be that the tracks melts together bit, since they are not very different in tempo and key. A great effort and a band I’m looking forward to hearing more from!

DEATHDESTRUCTION - Deathdestruction (CD)

Brutal! To be honest this is not 100 % what I’m into. Still I can really get into the heavy groove and the riffs. Deathdestruction reminds me quite a bit of Pantera in their later days. The vocals by Jimmie Strimmel sound highly inspired by Phil Anselmo, especially in songs like Fuck Yeah and Kill It! You will probably recognize Jimmie’s name from bands like Dead By April, Nightrage and Cipher System. The other members are boys of great musical breeding as well. Guitarist Henrik Danhage, drummer Jonas Ekdahl and bass player Fredrik Larsson are all ex-Evergrey. Fredrik Larsson is of course also found in Hammerfall. Deathdestruction is nothing even remotely close to their former employers. The album is angry! It will bite you in the ass if you put it on and turn your back on it. It will shred your speakers and leave your sub woofer gasping for air. It sounds like they have taken Pantera’s sound and put a turbo charger on it. It’s heavier, fatter and with way more balls to the drum sound. The band made their debut with a live-EP and to be honest this album does sound very stripped down and live as well. No unnecessary overdubs, no wimpy harmony vocals. This is raw, this is brutal, and surprisingly enough I really find myself getting into this. It’s nothing for the faint hearted though – it’s Deathdestruction!

EVERGREY - Glorious Collision (CD)

With a new line-up and a new label Göteborg melancholy progsters Evergrey return in glory. Well, I’m not just trying to be witty, it IS a really great album! Evergrey sure have had their dark moments, and that melancholy, slightly dark touch has become their trademark. With Glorious Collision they of course haven’t adopted any streaks of Monty Python humour or any major chords for that matter. However, the album does feel a bit more uplifting. New guitarist Marcus Jidell (Royal Hunt/The Ring) has added a bit more guitar harmonies, which feels refreshing, at least I haven’t really noticed them in the past in the same way. I must say, despite 3/5 of the band being new guys, only Tom Englund and keyboardist Rikard Zander remain from the previous album, it sounds very Evergrey.Old fans will not be disappointed. The new people them who are they? Guitars are handled by the aforementioned Marcus Jidell, bass is now played by former Mind’s Eye/Therion bassist Johann Niemann and the drums by Hannes van Dahl. From the first note you feel like this bunch has been playing together for years. It’s solid and it glues really well together. The song material is quite varied going to a variety of places, both in moods and tempos, even though the lower mid-tempo region still prevails. I’m glad to hear some more up-tempo stuff such as Free and Restoring The Loss, the cool balladry in songs like The Phantom Letters, The Disease… and album closer …And The Distance, which takes us from a really soft intro to a heavy chugging finale. I also really love the heavy riff-oriented stuff like I’m Drowning Alone. No weak spots as far as I can hear. A solid, consistent effort which again confirms Evergrey’s high position on the prog-oriented metal map.

THE CITADEL - A Passage Through Eternity (MCD 5tr)

Semi-proggish Swedish band The Citadel now follow up their debut The Brothers Of Grief with a five track MCD. The debut was a pleasant treat, but this little follow-up actually fits my musical taste buds even better. Opener A Voice Beyond gives me pretty strong Evergrey vibrations, but with a more uplifting melodic chorus than what the Gothenburg quintet offers. A really nice one, dark and heavy but with a slight streak of hope in the chorus. The mix is really fat and heavy adding the right elements to the overall audio experience. Next up is Demon’s Eye (nope, not a Deep Purple cover), which actually sounds even more like Evergrey, with singer Jonas Radehorn taking on a very suitable Tom Englund touch in phrasing and vocal tone. A killer track indeed! In Heaven you however hear more of Radehorn’s own voicing. This song also showcases a slightly more symphonic but yet melodic side, but still maintaining a heavy staccato base. Nice chorus that really sticks. When The Storm Begins is another killer, crushingly heavy thing with an oriental touch in some of the vocal phrases. Also hear you’ll find a more symphonic touch shining through in the chorus. I really dig the long lost classic “fire”-falsetto, which I had expected from bands like Enforcer or Steelwing. The MCS closes with the track 7, which follows nicely in the same tradition as the previous tracks, also here with a pretty dark and melancholic aura hovering over the audio delivery. I guess that is one of the things that makes me think of Evergrey. Five tracks is quite a good move, considering the heaviness and musical richness, yet it leaves me wanting more. A really great and interesting release.
